Delve into the history of radio in post-war divided Berlin with critical engineer Danja Vasiliev and museum educator and researcher Oleg Lutohin, who have teamed up to create a new workshop on the repair, upgrade, and preservation of vintage radio systems.
Drawing on radio history, media archeology and museum studies methods, learn how to mend old vintage radios and upgrade your Stern radio to Bluetooth. Bring your radio, or come and experiment with those available at the workshop and leave armed with the deeper knowledge our spectrum histories. Limited to participants. No prior knowledge of radio or engineering is required. The workshop will be in English. Bring your own radio, or play with those avail. Open to all types of radio repair this workshop will run as a special collaboration with Hackspace, FinnowStr 2a, as part of the Urban Host, 10th Anniversary, Block Party.
Biography
Danja Vasiliev is a Critical Engineer born in Saint-Petersburg and currently living and working in Berlin. His approach examines Systems and Networks through anti-disciplinary experimentation with hardware and software. In 2009 together with Gordan Savičić, Julian Oliver, and Bengt Sjölén, Danja founded ‘Studio Weise7’ in Neukölln, Berlin, with Sarah Grant joining the studio in 2015. Under the banner of Critical Engineering and ‘Studio Weise7’, Danja gives public workshops and talks, as well as regularly teaching courses on topics of network insecurity, software/OS modification, hardware re-engineering, digital forensics, and other technology-related subjects and he is the co-author of The Critical Engineering Manifesto (2011). With over two decades of experience, Danja has participated in computer-technology events, media-art exhibitions and seminars around the world and been the receipt of a number of awards and mentions at Ars Electronica, Japan Media Art Festival, transmediale and collaborated with many leading media organisations.
