Irma Mastenbroek
Presentation
Algorithms are the instructions about how to solve a problem using computers but how are they made and trained? How do they relate to artificial intelligence (AI) and why should we bother about them? Mathematician and tech activist, Irma Mastenbroek addresses such questions by providing a whistle stop tour on AI, algorithms and fairness.
Biography
Irma Mastenbroek is a mathematician, whose work specialises in mathematical algorithms and explainable AI, neural networks, recommendation algorithms and knowledge graphs. This combined with her background in computer science and tech activism, has lead Irma’s to focus on intersectional feminism in AI governance.
Currently an associated researcher at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society, AI & Society Lab, whose work explores tech and public values, Irma is currently working on a series of posters that describe ‘fairness’ in algorithmic terms for a general public.
Irma founded LODelle, a coding platform to collaborate on gender inclusivity in AI. Connected also to the Hippo AI, altruistic data trustee and open-source AI accelerator for the Health sector, Irma has worked with FemAI – Feminist AI for an Inclusive Future and is currently campaigning for pornography sites, to be included within Europe’s Digital Services Act (DSA) on large online platform compliancy.
