Biography
Johannes Paul Raether is an artist and Professor at the Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf. His performative based work focuses on the construction of identities (Avataras, AlterIdentities or SelfSisters), which emerge at various sites in public space (car parks, shopping centres, streets), where they research, teach and tell stories. In the guise of his so-called self-sisters, named Transformella, Protektorama, or Schwarmwesen, these colorful beings, made up from everyday objects, discuss complex topics such as bio and reproduction industries, globalized tourism or occult substances in contemporary technology. Raether’s works and performances have shown, among others, at the 9th Berlin Biennale, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Fridericianum in Kassel, Savvy Contemporary and District in Berlin, Transmission Gallery in Glasgow, Ludlow 38 in New York City and transmediale 2017.
