Performance: I Play Your Kitchen

Kitchens are usually thought of as familiar everyday spaces, indulging our sense of smell and taste but not everybody knows the auditory treasures hidden within its niches. Finnish drummer and percussionist Tatu Rönkkö has been exploring and discovering the sounds of different kitchens around the world for the past two years. Without any pre-planning and bringing no additional tools, Rönkkö plays improvised concerts in people’s kitchens using only the objects found in each space as instruments. Kettles, pots, forks, glasses, chop sticks, mixers and pepper mills become musical sources as what catches Rönkkö’s eyes and ears become part of the performance. Audiences have described the experience as “being in the middle of the Chinese Opera” as the boundaries of space, place and location dissolve under Rönkkö’s sonic spells.
